India has formally urged Russia to immediately release and repatriate 27 Indian nationals who, according to reports, were recruited into the Russian military under dubious or coercive circumstances. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), via spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, said that the information came from families, and that India is in close touch with those affected. The MEA has raised the issue both with Moscow and at the Russian embassy in New Delhi, insisting that these individuals be freed as soon as possible. These 27 are part of a larger pattern: earlier, India had confirmed that over 150 of its nationals had been recruited by the Russian military over time, with many already discharged after diplomatic interventions.
