Pay people to kill snakes, fewer snakes, problem solved. But the people of Delhi were smarter than the British expected. Instead of hunting existing snakes, they thought: "Why waste time running around with sticks? Let’s breed cobras at home like chickens. Instant passive income!" Soon, backyards were full of hissing side hustles. The British, realizing they had accidentally launched the world’s first multi-level snake marketing scheme, scrapped the bounty. And what did the breeders do with their now-worthless stock of cobras? They released them into the city. The result? Even more snakes than before. Congratulations! The problem-solving policy had successfully leveled up the problem. This became so famous it got its own name: The Cobra Effect – when a solution backfires and makes the problem worse.
