Bombay High Court Orders UK-Based Doctor to File Cooperation Undertaking in Defamation Case Against PM Modi The Bombay High Court on April 15 directed UK-based doctor and YouTuber Dr Sangram Patil to submit an undertaking guaranteeing his cooperation with ongoing investigations into allegations that he posted defamatory content against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders. Single-judge Justice Ashwin Bhobe emphasized that Patil must file this document, specifying his willingness to return to India whenever required by the investigating officer (IO) for further probe, provided he is given a 15-day advance notice. The court scheduled a review of the undertaking for May 5. The order followed a submission by Advocate General Milind Sathe, representing the Maharashtra Government, who argued that the interim request by Patil to lift the Look Out Circular (LOC) should not be considered for at least three months due to the ongoing nature of the investigation. Sathe, assisted by Chief Public Prosecutor Mankunwar Deshmukh, noted that the probe team had not yet established a link between Patil and the social media handle Shahar Aghadi, which had also posted similar defamatory content. Justice Bhobe challenged the AG’s stance, stating, “You cannot hold a person like this... You will have to complete the probe which you have not done yet... Thus, he cannot be held like this.” However, Sathe raised concerns about Patil’s status as a foreign national, highlighting the risk that he might not return to India if permitted to fly back to the UK. Senior Advocate Rajiv Shakdher, representing Patil, countered by asserting that his client would file an undertaking committing to return to India upon being called by the IO.#maharashtra_government #bombay_high_court #prime_minister_narendra_modhi #dr_sangram_patil #advocate_general_milind_sathe
