First Ave. will not be renewed when it expires at the end of the year, according to owner Andrea Shaw. The bar, which has been a staple of the city since 1954, is the longest-running establishment in Sioux Falls to operate under the same name. Shaw acquired the bar in 2006 from the original owners and has since focused on maintaining its reputation as a welcoming, no-frills spot. “My goal has always been simple: keep it the same kind of bar people have loved for generations — a place where you didn’t have to dress up, where the beer was cold and affordable, and where everyone was welcome,” she said in a statement. The bar has become more than just a business for Shaw. She described it as a “home away from home” for many patrons, where lifelong friendships were formed, stories were shared, and traditions like jukebox music and game celebrations were cherished. “There’s people that have been going there that their parents or grandparents have been going there,” she added, expressing emotional attachment to the community it has served. Despite the bittersweet nature of the relocation, Shaw is actively working on securing a new location. “This is me and my heart,” she said in an interview, acknowledging the difficulty of parting ways with the bar’s history and the loyal customers who have been part of its journey. The decision to move comes as the bar continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.
