His condition worsened when his oxygen levels dropped to dangerously low levels, prompting his caregivers to transport him over four hours away to a more affordable medical facility in Mérida. Upon arrival, doctors discovered one of his ribs had separated and was pressing into his lung, requiring nearly three liters of blood to be drained from his chest cavity. He underwent three life-saving surgeries and remained hospitalized for 18 additional days before being discharged.
