Used EV Batteries Can Power Homes as Second Source: Gadkari Union minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted the potential of repurposing used lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles during the inauguration of an EV startup in Nagpur. Speaking at the event, Gadkari emphasized that these batteries could serve as a “second source” of power for residential use, extending their lifecycle as stationary energy-storage systems. This approach, he noted, could enhance the sustainability and value of electric mobility while addressing the growing demand for renewable energy solutions. The startup, founded by Ashish Dokania, specializes in converting conventional petrol-powered mopeds into electric vehicles through retrofitting. Dokania’s company already operates plants in Bengaluru and Hyderabad and has expanded to Nagpur, offering a cost-effective alternative to full vehicle replacement. The retrofitting process involves replacing key components such as the battery, motor, controller, rear wheel, display, throttle, wiring, and mounts. Modifications to the swing arm and suspension are also made to accommodate the new system. Dokania explained that lead-acid batteries, while cheaper, have shorter lifespans compared to lithium-ion batteries, which can last up to 50,000 kilometers. He also noted that portable batteries can be charged at home, making them a practical option for users. However, he highlighted that battery-related components account for nearly 50% of the overall retrofitting cost, underscoring the need for affordable solutions to make EV adoption accessible to a broader audience.
