The situation escalated after violence erupted during a bike rally organized by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on August 19, resulting in damage to at least 31 vehicles, including those from Assam, injuries to 16 people, and two vehicles set ablaze. The Meghalaya Police confirmed the incident, prompting commercial vehicle operators in Guwahati to block traffic to and from Meghalaya at key entry points like Jorabat and Khanapara. As the blockade entered its second day, the North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union announced an indefinite halt to loading and unloading oil and gas products for Meghalaya until peace is restored. Protesters, including cab operators and union members, have maintained that their actions are a response to recurring harassment faced by Assam drivers in Meghalaya. A cab operator at a sit-in in Jorabat stated, “We will continue this protest until a permanent solution is found. It is a recurring issue of vehicles and drivers from Assam facing harassment in Meghalaya.” Others accused the Assam government of failing to take proactive steps to resolve the dispute.
