Ex-Aruba CTO Unveils Optical Startup Armed with $900M to Scale AI Interconnectivity Lumilens, an optical data center connectivity startup founded by Ankur Singla, a former Aruba CTO and former Cisco and F5 executive, has emerged from stealth mode with more than $900 million in total funding and a $5.5 billion valuation. The company, backed by investors including Bain Capital Ventures, Atreides Management, and Qualcomm Ventures, aims to revolutionize AI infrastructure by replacing copper cables with optical interconnects. Singla, who previously co-founded the Juniper-acquired firm Contrail Systems, emphasized that Lumilens is designed to meet the demands of the AI buildout by manufacturing interconnect technologies at scale, quality, and speed. The startup’s focus lies in developing full data center connectivity solutions, including near-package and co-packaged optics (NPO/CPO) for scale-up networking and optical modules for scale-out applications. According to Lumilens, its initial scale-out product has completed qualification and is already shipping into live AI data centers operated by an unnamed hyperscale customer. Singla highlighted that the primary bottleneck in AI development has shifted from the availability of GPUs to their connectivity, noting that hyperscalers require both increased optical capacity for existing networks and a way to directly link thousands of GPUs into a single cluster. Navin Chaddha, managing partner at Mayfield, praised Lumilens’ rapid execution, stating that the startup’s ability to achieve a $5.5 billion valuation and secure multibillion-dollar orders within two years is unprecedented in the firm’s 56-year history.#lumilens #bain_capital_ventures #ankur_singla #atreides_management #qualcomm_ventures

Optical Networking Firm Lumilens Valued at $5.5 Billion in Latest Funding Round Optical networking startup Lumilens announced on Thursday that it has reached a valuation of $5.51 billion following its latest funding round. The company, based in San Jose, California, designs and manufactures optical and networking products that enable data centers to transfer data at high speeds while using less power. The surge in investment in AI data centers has driven demand for such technologies, according to the firm. Lumilens raised more than $700 million in its Series C funding round, which was co-led by Atreides Management, Bain Capital Ventures, Meritech, Seligman Ventures, and Spark Capital. This brings the company’s total funding to over $900 million. The funding round reflects the growing interest in optical networking solutions as hyperscalers expand their data centers to meet the rising demand for artificial intelligence services. The company is already shipping products under a multi-billion-dollar agreement with a customer it has not disclosed. It confirmed the customer is one of the four hyperscalers—Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta. The data center boom, driven by the expansion of AI services, is increasing the need for networking technologies that can efficiently connect thousands of GPUs. Lumilens CEO Ankur Singla noted that the primary constraint for hyperscalers has shifted from the availability of GPUs to the ability to connect them. “Hyperscalers told us they need the same two things: far more optical capacity for the networks they run today, and a path to directly connecting thousands of GPUs together into a single cluster,” Singla said. The company plans to use the fresh capital to scale up its engineering and manufacturing operations.#lumilens #atrides_management #bain_capital_ventures #meritech #seligman_ventures
