Supreme Court Quashes FIRs Against Samay Raina & Others Over Disability Jokes, Appreciates Their Efforts To Make Amends The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the FIRs filed against comedian Samay Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Ghai, Sonali Thakkar, and Nishant Tanwar for making insensitive jokes about persons with disabilities. The court acknowledged the comedians’ efforts to address the issue and promote awareness about the challenges faced by people with disabilities. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V Mohana issued the order, emphasizing the respondents’ commitment to amending their actions and fostering dignity for the disabled community. The court highlighted that the comedians organized a chess tournament for specially abled individuals from March 14 to 16, 2026. The event, which received extensive media coverage, aimed to raise awareness about organizations supporting persons with disabilities, including those working with individuals affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The organizers also contributed financially to these groups. Additionally, the respondents proposed four fundraising shows to further their cause, though logistical challenges prevented them from inviting specially abled participants. However, they expressed willingness to involve SMA warriors and provide financial support for such initiatives. The court noted a constructive dialogue between the respondents and the petitioner NGO, Cure Foundation. The parties discussed programs to spread awareness about SMA and celebrate the achievements of "SMA warriors."
