Sutlieff was using the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile to analyze mid-infrared light from the Beta Pictoris system, focusing on the known planet Beta Pictoris b. During his analysis, he noticed an unusual signal—a tiny speck that appeared in the same region as the existing planets but was far too faint to be immediately recognized as a real planet. “Normally, when you see things like that, you work on the data some more, and these little scrappy signals go away because they're not real; they're noise and they vanish,” Sutlieff explained. However, after sharing the data with Markus Bonse, an astronomer at the European Southern Observatory, the speck persisted even after applying machine learning algorithms to clean the image. The discovery was confirmed by cross-referencing older archival images from the VLT and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
