Bengal Health Minister Orders Probe into Sebaashray Camp After Patient's Leg Amputation Bengal Health Minister Sharadwat Mukhopadhyay announced on Monday that his department would initiate a formal investigation into a patient’s complaint of losing a leg after a "botched treatment" at a Sebaashray medical camp, an initiative linked to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee. The probe follows an FIR registered against Banerjee and others after Prabir Biswas, husband of the alleged victim, alleged medical negligence during treatment at the camp. The incident involves Biswas’s wife, who reportedly attended a Sebaashray camp in February 2025 for chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. According to the complaint, she was prescribed medicines by a medical practitioner who did not disclose his full name or medical registration number. Her condition worsened, prompting her to seek treatment at a second Sebaashray camp, where doctors allegedly demanded a large sum for care before referring her to a government hospital. She was admitted to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital on March 19, underwent a total knee replacement on April 25, and later developed a post-operative vascular complication. An above-knee amputation was performed on May 27, as per the husband’s police complaint. Mukhopadhyay stated that an investigation committee had already been formed and would receive the patient’s official complaint to proceed. He emphasized that the police would be informed of the case, as they lack the technical expertise to analyze medical prescriptions, licenses, or drug quality.
