Phoenix Women: Mackenzie Barry on the Rise of the Wellingtonians With four games remaining in the regular season, the Wellington Phoenix women’s playoff fate rests entirely in their hands. A 3-0 victory over Brisbane Roar at Hnry Stadium on Saturday propelled Bev Priestman’s team to third place in the A-League ladder. The top six teams in the 11-team competition will qualify for the finals, and the Phoenix now travel to bottom-placed Sydney FC in pursuit of three crucial points that could secure their first playoff berth since their debut season in 2021-22. Central defender Mackenzie Barry, 24, has been a key figure for the club since its inception. Approaching 90 appearances, she holds the record for most games played for the Phoenix. Originally from New Plymouth, Barry is currently leading the team as regular captain C.J. Bott is on maternity leave. She embraces the added responsibility, noting that Bev Priestman asked her to take on the role for the remainder of the season. “It’s an added responsibility, but I felt prepared,” Barry says. “I’ve been at this club for a while, and the younger players respect me. It’s about being a role model, setting standards at training, and keeping everyone focused on our goal of making the finals.” The Phoenix’s success this season is rooted in their defensive solidity, conceding just 13 goals and maintaining a goal difference of +19. Barry credits the team’s improved training regimen, strategic meetings, and Bev Priestman’s leadership for their consistency. “Bev demands respect from the room, and everyone wants to work hard for her and our teammates,” she explains. “She’s a great leader who brings out the best in people. The international signings have also elevated the team’s quality, and we’ve got a strong, hardworking group.#sydney_fc #wellington_phoenix #mackenzie_barry #bev_priestman #new_plymouth
