The incident occurred in the new building’s third-floor SNCU (Sick Newborn Care Unit), where the victims—two boys and one girl aged between 2 days and 10 days—were receiving treatment for neonatal conditions or low birth weight. The fire, suspected to have originated from a short circuit in a ventilator’s monitor, rapidly spread through the unit, engulfing critical medical equipment such as baby warmers and ventilators. The blaze, which began around 3:30 AM, led to the immediate evacuation of 36 babies from the SNCU to other units of the hospital. The mothers of these infants were located on different floors, allowing staff to safely relocate them. However, the fire’s intensity and the presence of flammable materials, including plastic components and oxygen supplies, exacerbated the situation. Four to six additional babies suffered burn injuries, with some in critical condition, and were transferred to the Divisional Referral Service Hospital (Super Speciality) and Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Medical College Hospital for treatment. Eyewitnesses reported that a ventilator in the SNCU “suddenly exploded,” a rare medical event that likely contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. ₹45.56 Cr Allocated for Tourism Project Near Babulkheda Nagpur: The Nagpur forest division has initiated plans for a nature tourism project near the Panchmukhi Hanuman temple premises in Babulkheda, approximately 35 kilometers from the city. A groundbreaking ceremony was held earlier this week, with the presence of revenue minister and Nagpur district guardian minister Chandrashekar Bawankule. The project, sanctioned under the Maharashtra Nisarg Paryatan Vikas Mandal (MNPVM), will be executed by the forest department. The nature park will include a large entrance plaza, parking facilities, pathways, a nature information and lecture center, a restaurant, an eco park, an adventure park, a bamboo walking trail, a bouldering deck, cottages, and a children's play area. Infrastructure such as drinking water supply, sanitation, and other basic facilities will also be developed in the vicinity. The project incorporates sustainable measures like solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and waste management systems. Bawankule emphasized that the project is for the people, stating it would generate employment for locals and suggested establishing a skill development center to train youth from surrounding villages.
