The Silverpit Crater, located 700 meters beneath the North Sea and about 80 miles off the coast of Yorkshire, was first identified in 2002. Its three-kilometer-wide bowl and 20-kilometer ring of faults puzzled researchers for years, with some theories attributing its formation to salt layer shifts or volcanic activity. However, new evidence, including rare shocked quartz and feldspar crystals found in rock samples from an oil well, provides definitive proof of an asteroid impact. Dr. Uisdean Nicholson of Heriot-Watt University, who led the study, explained that seismic imaging revealed the crater’s structure, while microscopic analysis of the minerals confirmed the extreme pressures of an impact event.
