The scam involves social media posts promoting fake "rental boyfriend" deals, such as "Cafe Date" at Rs 499 or "Movie Date" at Rs 1,249, with additional packages for shopping, events, and weddings. These posts, often shared on Instagram, Telegram, and Facebook, use AI-generated photos of attractive men to create false impressions. Victims are encouraged to believe these profiles are genuine, with assurances of privacy and security. However, once the scammer collects payment via QR codes or digital wallets, they block the victim’s account and disappear, leaving them stranded. Sajjanar warned that these scams target vulnerable individuals, particularly those feeling lonely or seeking companionship. Cybercriminals exploit personal information gathered during online chats, such as phone numbers and photos, to later harass or blackmail victims. The commissioner urged caution, stressing that scammers often use fabricated stories to gain trust before demanding money. He also advised parents to monitor their children’s social media activity and online interactions.
