Historic American Flags Display Marks U.S. 250th Anniversary on Isle of Palms Twenty-six American flags representing key moments in U.S. history will be displayed on Isle of Palms this summer as part of a traveling exhibit commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary. The installation, organized by the Isle of Palms Exchange Club and local VFW Post 3137, will make stops across the region, with its first appearance at the Isle of Palms Recreation Center on May 11, 2026. The display features a semi-circle of flags arranged around a large reproduction of the Declaration of Independence, highlighting the evolution of the national symbol over the past 250 years. The exhibit begins with the Grand Union flag, also known as the Continental Colors, which featured red and white stripes with the Union Jack in the top left corner. This design was used during the American Revolution and was later replaced by the 13-star, 13-strip flag adopted in 1777. The current 50-star flag, which became official in 1960 after Hawaii joined the Union, is also part of the display. Other flags include the Star Spangled Banner pattern credited to Declaration signer Francis Hopkinson and the circular star configuration associated with Betsy Ross’s 1778 design. The flags will be on view at the Recreation Center through May 21, after which they will move to the United Methodist Church on 21st Avenue for Memorial Day weekend. Subsequent stops include Leola Hanbury Park in June and the nature garden at 7th Avenue and Palm Boulevard in July. The Public Safety Building on J.C. Long Boulevard will host the final location of the tour in July.#declaration_of_independence #island_of_palms #island_of_palms_exchange_club #vfw_post_3137 #sullivan_s_island_elementary

Trump to feature on limited number of commemorative US passports The United States government has announced the release of a limited edition of passports that will feature a portrait of former President Donald Trump. The White House confirmed the initiative, which is part of the celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in July. The design, first reported by Fox News, includes an image of Trump surrounded by text from the Declaration of Independence, the American flag, and his signature in gold. The passports will be available for any American citizen applying for a passport during the rollout period, though availability is expected to be limited. The Washington Passport Agency will be the sole location where these special editions can be obtained. The State Department released a rendering of the passport, showcasing Trump's portrait alongside the historical text and symbols. A White House spokesperson emphasized the significance of the design, stating it provides "yet another great way Americans can join in the spectacular celebrations for America's 250th birthday." The spokesperson also highlighted other events tied to the anniversary, including the UFC250 Fight, the Great American State Fair, and the Freedom250 Grand Prix, which they described as part of Trump's efforts to "renew national pride and patriotism." Current US passports depict scenes from the nation's history, such as the Moon landing, along with iconic symbols like the Statue of Liberty. It remains unclear whether citizens will have the option to opt out of the special edition. The initiative is part of a broader trend of associating Trump's name and likeness with government programs and public infrastructure.#donald_trump #white_house #trump_kennedy_center #declaration_of_independence #washington_passport_agency

US Mint Issues Special 1776-2026 Designs for Dime, Quarter, Half Dollar The U.S. Mint is launching a series of commemorative coins to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. The redesigns, featuring dual dates of 1776-2026, will be available for the dime, quarter, and half dollar. These coins are part of a broader effort to honor America’s history and celebrate its enduring legacy. U.S. Mint Director Paul Hollis emphasized the significance of the redesigns, calling it the most substantial update to U.S. coins in over a century. The changes, which will be available for a limited time, include updated designs that reflect key moments in American history. Hollis expressed hope that the coins would be cherished by Americans and passed down to future generations, serving as a tangible connection to the nation’s story. The “Liberty Dime” will feature a design inspired by the 1790s dime, incorporating imagery of Lady Liberty. For the quarters, five new designs will be released, each representing a pivotal moment in the nation’s founding. These include the Mayflower Compact, the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and a Gettysburg Address quarter that highlights President Abraham Lincoln. The half dollar will showcase a portrait of Lady Liberty, depicted as looking forward to another 250 years of American history. Hollis noted that the coins will carry the dual dates 1776-2026 on their obverse, symbolizing the transition from the nation’s founding to its 250th anniversary. He anticipated that these coins would be preserved by collectors and families, serving as a lasting reminder of the country’s journey. The redesigns aim to blend historical significance with modern commemoration, ensuring that the coins remain relevant and meaningful to the public.#declaration_of_independence #us_mint #paul_hollis #liberty_dime #mayflower_compact

The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States with a special broadcast of “Music and the Spoken Word” on Sunday, July 5, 2026. Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid, a three-time Super Bowl champion and one of the NFL’s most respected leaders, will serve as guest narrator for the event. Reid will highlight themes of unity, perseverance, and faith that have defined the American narrative. Reid reflected on his connection to the nation’s founding, noting his time living near Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was drafted. He described the Founding Fathers as “the ultimate team,” emphasizing their resilience in overcoming challenges and creating a lasting legacy. “I’m honored to join The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square to celebrate the birth of our nation in a place that reflects the same spirit of unity and faith,” he said. The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, nearly 180 years old, has performed globally, including at the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City and multiple U.S. presidential inaugurations. Former President Ronald Reagan once called the choir “America’s Choir,” a title that underscores its cultural significance. In 2003, the group received the National Medal of Arts from President George W. Bush for its contributions to music, its global reach, and its ability to inspire audiences worldwide. Choir President Michael O. Leavitt emphasized the choir’s role in honoring the Declaration of Independence’s proclamation of religious freedom. The choir’s signature program, “Music and the Spoken Word,” has been a weekly staple since July 15, 1929, just before the Great Depression.#kansas_city_chiefs #salt_lake_city #andy_reid #tabernacle_choir_at_temple_square #declaration_of_independence
