Young Mother Dies After Childbirth as Ambulance Fails to Reach Remote Chandrapur Village A 25-year-old woman from a remote village in Chandrapur district, Sangeeta Gedam, died after childbirth when an ambulance could not reach her due to the absence of a motorable road, underscoring the persistent challenges of inadequate infrastructure in rural India. The incident occurred in Ghodankappi, a secluded settlement in the hilly Jiwati taluka near the Telangana border, where access to essential healthcare services remains severely limited despite decades of independence. Sangeeta, who was in her eighth month of pregnancy, began experiencing labor pains during the 33rd week of her gestation. Despite enduring severe discomfort throughout the day, her family did not seek medical assistance. On June 14, after delivering her baby at home, she developed severe postpartum bleeding. Only then did her family contact health authorities, prompting an ambulance to be dispatched to the nearest accessible point atop a hill near the village. However, the lack of a road beyond that location prevented the ambulance from reaching her. Family members struggled to transport her to the waiting ambulance through difficult terrain, losing critical time before she could receive treatment. Sangeeta succumbed to excessive blood loss before medical help arrived. The newborn, a baby girl weighing approximately 2.2 kg, survived and is reported to be healthy and stable. District health officer Dr. Ashok Katare highlighted the village’s inaccessibility, noting it lies deep within a valley with a population of around 60 to 80 people.
