MMC Chief Urges Doctors to Uphold Compassion, Ethics, and Public Trust Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) administrator Dr Vinky Rughwani called on the medical community to reaffirm its commitment to ethical practice, compassionate patient care, and professional integrity during a speech on the eve of Doctors’ Day. Speaking in Nagpur, Dr Rughwani emphasized that while technological advancements continue to reshape healthcare, the human element of medicine remains irreplaceable. He described the medical profession as both a privilege and a responsibility, noting that patients entrust doctors with their lives and that this trust must be honored through empathy and ethical conduct. Dr Rughwani highlighted the rapid evolution of healthcare, driven by innovations such as artificial intelligence and digital health tools. However, he cautioned that these advancements should complement, rather than replace, the core values of the profession. “Technology can support clinical decisions, but it cannot substitute compassion, reassurance, and meaningful communication between a doctor and a patient,” he said. He argued that the role of doctors extends beyond diagnosis and treatment, encompassing responsibilities such as promoting preventive healthcare, encouraging voluntary blood, organ, and body donation, spreading awareness about genetic disorders, combating health misinformation, and strengthening public confidence in the healthcare system. The MMC chief also stressed the importance of ethics as the cornerstone of medicine.
