Yvette Nicole Brown's Journey Through Alzheimer's Caregiving Over the past decade, Yvette Nicole Brown has faced numerous difficult decisions while caring for her father, Omar, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2013. The "Drake & Josh" actress chose to take on the responsibility of his care, relocating him from his home in Ohio to California. In 2014, she stepped away from her role on the TV show "Community" to dedicate more time to his needs. As his condition progressed, she became his primary caregiver, handling personal tasks like bathing and toileting. Brown described the emotional toll of these choices, recalling a conversation with her father where she explained, "This is where we are. You need help, and I'm coming in there to help." However, the most challenging decision came in 2024 after Omar fractured his hip. The surgery exacerbated his dementia, leading to unpredictable behavior and a loss of mobility. Initially, Brown doubled down on her caregiving efforts, but her father’s social worker advised her to consider alternative options. She realized that while her love for her father was unwavering, her ability to provide the best care might be limited. "Keeping him in my home would have been a detriment to him," she admitted. After careful consideration, she placed Omar in a care facility just 10 minutes from her home, allowing her to visit daily. "It's just a weight off of me," she said, noting that while caregiving itself wasn’t burdensome, her concern for his quality of life was. Brown’s experiences have led her to advocate for other caregivers. As chairman of the Creative Coalition’s Entertainment Industry Commission on Family Caregiving, she shares her story through the organization’s "Caring for the Family Caregiver" PSA series with AARP.#community #yvette_nicole_brown #omar #creative_coalition #drake_josh
