Old Farmer’s Almanac Predicts Winter 2026-27 Weather Patterns As the summer months draw to a close, the Old Farmer’s Almanac has released its forecast for the upcoming winter season, offering insights into potential weather conditions across North America. The prediction is based on a combination of climate signals, including ocean temperatures, atmospheric patterns, solar activity, and the behavior of the polar vortex. While no single factor can determine the exact weather, these elements are expected to shape the winter months significantly. One of the most prominent indicators is the El Niño phenomenon, a climate pattern characterized by warmer-than-usual waters in the tropical Pacific. This year, forecasters anticipate a “Super” El Niño season, which could influence weather patterns by altering the jet stream. The jet stream, a fast-moving air current in the atmosphere, plays a critical role in steering storms and determining regional temperatures. During an El Niño winter, shifts in the jet stream can lead to changes in precipitation distribution, with some areas experiencing increased rainfall and others facing drier conditions. Eric Snodgrass, a Senior Science Fellow with Nutrien Agronomy, highlighted the potential impact of El Niño on fall weather. He explained that a more energetic subtropical jet stream during the fall could lead to a wetter season across much of the United States, particularly in the southern regions.
