NMC To Scientifically Assess Health of 5,000 Trees Using Ai-lidar Technology Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched a pilot project to scientifically assess the health and safety risks of nearly 5,000 trees across the city using artificial intelligence (AI) and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology. The initiative, inaugurated on Wednesday by NMC mayor Neeta Thakre at Deekshabhoomi, aims to create detailed digital replicas of trees while identifying structural weaknesses and ecological benefits. The project, facilitated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, involves a specialized survey vehicle equipped with LiDAR scanners and AI-based analytical tools, operated by Treecotech Arboriculture Solution and Greehill. Thakre inspected the technology during the inauguration and traveled in the survey vehicle, where experts demonstrated how the non-invasive system could rapidly evaluate tree health without causing damage. The project will generate comprehensive reports on tree vitality, structural stability, and safety risks, along with recommendations for maintenance and conservation. Officials emphasized that the technology will enable early detection of hazardous trees, improve public safety by preventing branch falls or collapses, and quantify ecological benefits such as carbon sequestration and shade generation. The initiative involves a multidisciplinary team of project coordinators, AI specialists, certified arborists, GIS professionals, LiDAR operators, and technical support staff.
