Nagpur Commemorates Muharram with Ashura Observances and Community Initiatives Nagpur is preparing to observe Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, with solemn rituals and community activities to honor the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, grandson of Prophet Muhammad. Shia and Sunni Muslims across the city and nearby Kamptee are organizing religious gatherings, mourning processions, prayers, and charity initiatives to commemorate Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, which marks the tragic martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. The event is considered one of the most significant and solemn occasions in the Islamic calendar, symbolizing resistance against tyranny and the pursuit of justice. Naushad Ali Haidry, a representative of the Shia Ithna Ashri Haidry Jamaat, emphasized the spiritual and historical importance of Ashura. "Ashura represents the final stand for truth, justice, and resistance against oppression," he said. Haidry explained that Shia Muslims view the day as a solemn occasion of mourning, recalling how Imam Hussain and his followers were brutally killed by the Umayyad ruler Yazid’s army after refusing to pledge allegiance to tyranny. The first 10 days of Muharram are dedicated to remembrance, culminating in Ashura, with Shia communities participating in mourning gatherings known as majalis. During these events, scholars recount the events of Karbala, while nohas (poetic recitations) and marsiyas (elegiac verses) are performed to honor Imam Hussain and his companions. A major Ashura procession is planned to begin at Haidry Masjid in Mominpura and proceed to Karbala at Imambada, passing through key neighborhoods of Nagpur.#nagpur #kamptee #haidry_masjid #imambada #shia_ithna_ashri_haidry_jamaat
