The incident occurred near the Japanese Garden area on a Sunday morning, around 6:15 am, when the vehicle allegedly driven by 32-year-old Tushar Kakde mounted a footpath and crashed into the forest office compound wall, hurling the elderly man several meters before he landed headfirst on the road. Saundhiya, a retired clerk from Awasthi Nagar in Mankapur, had been walking his usual route from Japanese Garden Square toward the rear gate of Lok Bhavan, a path he had followed for years. The car, a taxi permit vehicle with registration MH-31 GD0088, was reportedly driven by Kakde, who was accompanied by the vehicle owner’s son, Yash Chahande, and another passenger, Himanshu Raut. Preliminary investigations suggest the group had stopped for poha at Shankar Nagar Square earlier in the morning and may have consumed alcohol before the crash. Police suspect the driver was under the influence of liquor and involved in street racing, as the vehicle lost control near the forest office compound. The car swerved onto the footpath, smashed into the compound wall, and continued scraping the wall for nearly 60 meters before striking Saundhiya from behind. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the loud crash drawing attention from morning walkers and residents. Raut, who sustained serious injuries, was trapped inside the damaged vehicle and later rescued by emergency teams.
