The Ice Bucket Challenge, which gained massive traction in 2014, raised an estimated $135 million in the United States and $220 million worldwide, according to the ALS Therapy Development Institute. Johnson, who has been using a speech-generating device based on his voice recordings to communicate, emphasized the importance of the cause during his interview. He revealed that his diagnosis occurred last year and that his case is classified as sporadic ALS, a form that accounts for the majority of cases. "There's no history of ALS in my family," he explained. "My doctors believe my case is what's called sporadic ALS, which is actually how the vast majority of ALS cases happen. That's one of the reasons this disease can be so shocking. It can happen to someone who never expected it."
