Nmc partners iforest to boost heat preparedness, plan long term cooling strategy Nagpur: With peak summer approaching, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has intensified its efforts to prepare for rising temperatures by partnering with the International Forum for Environment, Sustainability & Technology (iFOREST). The collaboration, announced during a high-level interdepartmental meeting chaired by municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar, aims to strengthen the city’s heat action plan and develop an Integrated Heat and Cooling Action Plan (IHCAP). The initiative brings together senior officials from health, fire services, town planning, public health engineering, traffic police, and social welfare departments to design both immediate and long-term strategies to combat extreme heat and manage cooling demands. Over the next two months, iFOREST will work with NMC to enhance the existing heat action plan prepared by the health department, focusing on on-ground interventions to reduce heat risks during the current summer. Simultaneously, the organization will begin drafting Nagpur’s first IHCAP, which will serve as a systemic roadmap to address extreme heat and sustainable cooling solutions. Officials emphasized that the plan will prioritize vulnerable groups such as residents of informal settlements, outdoor workers, traffic personnel, and low-income communities, who face the highest risk of heat stress. Municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar highlighted the need for scientifically designed interventions aligned with citizens’ needs, stressing the importance of coordinated action across departments.#nagpur #maharashtra_government #nagpur_municipal_corporation #vipin_itankar #iforest
