Power Theft Proves Costly, Kamptee Man Gets One-Year Jail, Rs 30 Lakh Fine A resident of Kamptee, Parvez Ahmed Mohammad Idris, 65, was sentenced to one year in prison and fined Rs 30 lakh after being convicted of electricity theft through tampering with power distribution equipment. The judgment, delivered by Judge Shilpa M Bais, underscores the legal consequences of power theft and related offenses. Idris, who resides on Yerkheda Road in Kamptee, was found guilty under provisions of the Electricity Act. The court also mandated that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional one-year simple imprisonment. The case dates back to 2014 when a Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) inspection team raided Idris’s premises in the Ismailpur area of Kamptee. During the raid, officials discovered evidence of power theft, including an HPL three-phase electricity meter, an MCBCT box, and a 30-foot copper cable used for an illegal connection. Following the inspection, a case was registered at the MSEDCL Police Station under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003. The matter was later tried in a sessions court. Assistant Public Prosecutor WM Kazi represented the prosecution and presented both documentary and oral evidence during the trial. After reviewing the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, the court convicted Idris of electricity theft. The court also directed that the time Idris had already spent in custody during the trial be adjusted against his sentence, as per the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Additionally, the seized materials, valued at approximately Rs 35,000, were ordered to be handed over to the MSEDCL Kamptee division after the appeal period expired.
