PhD Scholar Dies From Electrocution On Panjab University Campus; Family Receives Financial Aid And Job Offer A 28-year-old PhD scholar at Panjab University in Chandigarh, Jyoti, died after allegedly being electrocuted on campus on Tuesday. The incident occurred as she was traveling from her hostel to her department in the Department of Microbiology. Officials stated that she took an unpaved pathway due to waterlogging caused by recent rains and came into contact with an electric current originating from a nearby electric junction box. She collapsed and was rushed to a hospital, where doctors confirmed her death. Students at the university staged a massive protest outside the office of Vice Chancellor Prof Renu Vig, demanding accountability from those responsible for campus electrical maintenance and compensation for Jyoti’s family. The protest highlighted concerns about safety standards on the campus and called for immediate action to prevent similar incidents. Following discussions with Jyoti’s family late Tuesday night, Panjab University authorities announced financial assistance of Rs 16 lakh and a job offer for her brother. Jyoti’s brother, who has completed 10+2 and holds an ITI (electrical) degree, was provided employment as an electrician at the university in accordance with Punjab government rules. The university’s decision to offer him a position was seen as a step toward addressing the family’s financial needs. Jyoti’s family includes her father, a farmer who also works as a driver at a private school in Haryana, and her mother, a homemaker. Jyoti was supporting her family through a senior research fellowship.
