West Bengal Faces Kalbaisakhi and Heavy Rainfall in South Region The Meteorological Department has issued warnings about the continued threat of Kalbaisakhi storms and heavy rainfall in South Bengal, with eight districts expected to experience winds of 50-60 km/h and three districts facing heavy downpours. The advisory comes as the region continues to grapple with the effects of a cyclonic system forming near the Himalayas, which has brought in a steady flow of moisture from the Bay of Bengal. The storm activity is expected to intensify over the coming days, with the southern parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, likely to see significant rainfall and strong winds. On Wednesday, parts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, experienced moderate to heavy rain, leading to a drop in nighttime temperatures. The minimum temperature in Kolkata fell to 20.4°C on Thursday, a decline of 5.8°C from the previous day’s reading of 27.7°C. The department has warned that light to moderate rain could continue on Thursday, with the sky remaining cloudy. The affected districts include Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Puruliya, Bakur, East and West Bardhaman, and Nadia. Among these, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas have been placed under heavy rainfall alerts. The department also noted that the remaining districts will experience winds of 40-50 km/h, accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rain. Kolkata is included in the list of areas likely to face strong winds. The warning extends until 6 May, with the department forecasting continued storm activity across South Bengal. Meanwhile, North Bengal will see rain until 7 May, though heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected in specific areas like Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar.#kolkata #west_bengal #meteorological_department #himalayas #kalbaisakhi
