Krafton hosts inaugural BGMI Esports event in Chennai Krafton India, the publisher of Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), organized the finals of its BGIS 2026 esports tournament in Chennai, marking the first time the event was held in the city. The three-day competition featured sixteen elite teams vying for a total prize pool of ₹4 crore. The participating teams were selected through rigorous qualification rounds that attracted over 2 lakh players, with each team consisting of four members. Karan Mahesh Pathak, Associate Director of Esports at Krafton India, shared insights about the event’s significance during a press briefing. He noted that the company now hosts four flagship esports events annually and plans to expand its calendar in the coming year, though specific details about future events were not disclosed. Pathak emphasized that the primary goal of these initiatives is to foster the broader gaming ecosystem rather than generate immediate revenue. “Currently, there is no revenue from these events, and we are investing in the ecosystem,” he explained. The esports events are intended to increase visibility for Krafton’s games and strengthen its brand appeal, particularly among younger audiences. Pathak also highlighted the unique position of India’s gaming industry, stating that while the global gaming sector faces challenges, the talent pool and stability within India’s gaming community remain robust. He pointed out that the Indian market’s dynamics differ from global trends, with the tech sector experiencing some pressure but the gaming industry maintaining resilience. The BGIS 2026 tournament underscores Krafton’s commitment to growing competitive gaming in India.#chennai #bgis_2026 #krafton_india #battlegrounds_mobile_india #karan_mahesh_pathak
