Employment Guarantee Scheme Faces Stagnation in Karimnagar The employment guarantee scheme in Karimnagar district, Telangana, has failed to meet its targets despite four months of implementation. The scheme, aimed at providing 15.20 lakh workdays in the 2026-27 financial year, has seen only 15% completion after four months, far below the expected pace. Key issues include the limited availability of work for laborers, with only 60-90 thousand workdays completed in July and August 2026. The scheme’s reliance on job cards for rural workers has also faced challenges, as only 1.16 lakh out of 2.35 lakh registered laborers are actively participating. Despite efforts to allocate work through gram sabhas and field assistants, many laborers remain without employment. A staff strike by implementation teams has further hampered progress. Workers from the Andhra Pradesh Employment Guarantee Scheme (AP EGS) have been on strike since July 27, demanding better wages and conditions. While field assistants continue to operate, the absence of full staff has led to delays in assigning work to laborers. The scheme’s performance has also been affected by the prioritization of specific projects, such as the Vanmahotsava festival and Indira Gandhi village initiatives, which have diverted resources from broader labor allocation. This has resulted in a decline in daily wages for workers, with fewer laborers receiving employment compared to previous years.
