Government Clarifies No Privatization of Tribal Hostels in Maharashtra The Maharashtra government has officially clarified that its tribal hostels remain under public control and have not been privatized. This statement comes amid concerns raised about a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Late Laxmanrao Mankar Smruti Sanstha, a Nagpur-based organization, to provide free educational and personality-development programs for students residing in government-run tribal hostels. The department emphasized that no rights over hostel buildings, assets, or administrative management have been transferred to private entities. The MoU, valid until August 15, 2028, outlines a three-year collaboration where the organization will conduct 18 voluntary programs without financial compensation from the government. These initiatives include entrepreneurship workshops, career guidance, competitive examination preparation, spoken English training, financial literacy sessions, and other social development activities. The organization’s role is strictly supplementary, focusing on enhancing students’ skills and personal growth without interfering with the hostel’s core operations. The tribal development department operates 490 government hostels across the state, accommodating a combined capacity of 65,084 students. The integrated tribal development officer in Chandrapur, Vikas Rachelwar, reiterated that the management and control of all tribal hostels will remain with the department.
