Trey Falwell sues Liberty University, the school his father once led Trey Falwell, the son of Jerry Falwell Jr., has filed a lawsuit against Liberty University, alleging that the school violated his 15-year employment contract. The case, first reported by Daniel Silliman of the Roys Report, centers on a personal services contract signed in January 2016 between Falwell and his father, Jerry Falwell Jr. The contract, which expires in June 2030, guaranteed Falwell a salary of $88,000, annual 5% raises, a $600 monthly car allowance, free tuition, and other benefits. According to the lawsuit, his salary was increased to $220,000 in 2017. The contract stipulates that it would become void if Falwell was fired for cause. Otherwise, the university was obligated to continue paying him until 2030, even if he was terminated without cause. Falwell alleges that he was fired in April 2021, approximately 10 months after his father resigned as president of the school. The lawsuit claims that upon termination, he became entitled to continued payments of his then-current salary and other benefits, totaling $1,750,000. Lawyers for Falwell did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the five-year delay in filing a claim for wages. Liberty University has denied the allegations, stating that the lawsuit is without merit and that the university will vigorously defend the case. A spokesman for the school told RNS, “Liberty University disputes the allegations about Trey Falwell’s termination without cause and that he is entitled to compensation. The lawsuit is without merit, and the University will vigorously defend this case.” This is not the first legal action involving the Falwell family and Liberty University.
