NBC's Pilot Season Revival Will Continue in 2027 NBC executives Lisa Katz and Jeff Bader revealed earlier this year that the network’s approach to pilot season has evolved significantly since its peak in the past. During a conference call ahead of the 2026 NBCUniversal upfronts, Katz, president of scripted content for NBC and Peacock, shared anecdotes about the network’s former practice of producing up to 12 dramas and six pilots in a single open time period. Bader, president of program planning strategy at NBC, added that such high-volume pilot production was once standard. However, both executives emphasized that these practices have since shifted, with NBC now prioritizing a more selective approach. Despite this, the network ordered eight scripted pilots this season—more than any single network had since 2022. Four of these pilots were greenlit for full series: the dramas Line of Fire and The Rockford Files, and the comedies Newlyweds and Sunset P.I.. Line of Fire and Newlyweds are slated for fall 2026 premieres, while The Rockford Files and Sunset P.I.—both centered on private investigators—will debut in early 2027. Katz highlighted the strategic value of pilot season, noting that it allows NBC to showcase finished products to all departments before a show airs. This process enables marketing, scheduling, and other teams to collaborate on how a series could fit into the network’s lineup. “It’s a way to have everyone look at it and decide together,” she explained. “Where they can actually see what the show is and how it could work.” Katz also emphasized that NBC’s decision to continue investing in pilot season is driven by the need to maintain flexibility. “We were looking at what potential slots we would have and wanting to have options for those slots,” she said.#nbc #lisa_katz #jeff_bader #universal_television #line_of_fire
