50 Glorious Years of NUTA Bulletin: A Chronicle of Teachers' Struggles and Higher Education Evolution Nagpur University Teachers’ Association (NUTA) has marked a significant milestone with the completion of 50 years of uninterrupted publication of its official journal, the NUTA Bulletin. Launched in 1976, the publication has served as a vital record of the teachers’ movement and developments in higher education, evolving from a platform for professional advocacy to a comprehensive archive of Maharashtra’s educational and social struggles. The Bulletin began as a fortnightly publication, initially distributing free copies to life members of NUTA. Before its formal launch, the association relied on issue-specific booklets authored by its then-president, Prof B T Deshmukh, a former Member of Legislative Council (MLC). These early materials, including works like The Upcoming College Code and Why Teachers Took To Road, addressed critical issues such as pay scales, university governance, and the broader socio-political context of education. After 1976, the Bulletin transitioned to a regular publication, maintaining its role as a trusted source of information for educators. One of the Bulletin’s most pivotal moments came during the 1987-1988 nationwide teachers’ strike, which escalated into a prolonged agitation in Maharashtra. When the government sought to modify the central pay-revision scheme, particularly by increasing workload demands, NUTA intensified its resistance.
