Samsung, SK Hynix: South Korean Announces AI, Semiconductor Mega-Projects Shares of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix fell on Monday following South Korea’s announcement of sweeping artificial intelligence and semiconductor mega-projects. The government’s plan, valued at 800 trillion won ($517.87 billion), aims to bolster the nation’s semiconductor leadership and expand its AI infrastructure through large-scale investments and new manufacturing capacity. President Lee Jae Myung emphasized the need for South Korea to accelerate its technological advancements to secure the innovations driving the AI era. The initiative includes the construction of two new semiconductor fabrication plants by both Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix in the country’s southwest region. These facilities are part of a broader national semiconductor ecosystem project designed to enhance production capabilities and shorten the timeline from licensing to construction. South Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Resources, Jung-Kwan Kim, stated that the government will “rapidly expand our production capacity” by streamlining processes and accelerating project timelines. The announcement followed reports from the Maeil Business Newspaper that Samsung Group plans to unveil a 1,000 trillion won ($646 billion) investment program over the next decade. This blueprint spans semiconductor fabrication plants, AI data centers, advanced packaging, batteries, and displays. Specific allocations include approximately 300 trillion won for new fabs in southwestern South Korea, 360 trillion won for the Yongin semiconductor cluster, and over 350 trillion won for AI data centers. However, the report did not clarify whether these figures overlap or are separate components of the investment strategy.#south_korea #sk_hynix #samsung_electronics #president_lee_jae_myung #minister_jung_kwan_kim
