Water Systems Cyberattack Sparks National Security Concerns A coordinated cyberattack targeting operational technology at more than 30 community water systems across seven states has raised alarms about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure. Federal agencies, including the FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), are investigating the incident, which disrupted water operations in Minnesota and at least six other states. The attack, which occurred over two days in early July 2026, highlights the growing threat of cyber intrusions on essential services and the potential consequences of such breaches. The attack struck on July 26 and 27, affecting systems that control physical equipment such as pumps, valves, and treatment machinery. Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) activated the state’s cybersecurity response and collaborated with federal agencies to investigate. While no water supply was compromised, some systems experienced temporary outages or communication issues. For example, in Braham, a water plant initially went offline for an unknown reason before being restored within hours. Officials attributed the outage to a malicious cyberattack, though no residents were advised to alter their water usage. Other communities reported similar issues. In Plymouth, two water towers and several wastewater lift stations faced communication problems, though water levels and quality remained unaffected.
