Monsoon Depression Sparks Heavy Rain Alerts Across Eastern and Northern India A monsoon depression over Jharkhand has triggered heavy to very heavy rainfall across eastern India, with conditions expected to weaken in the coming days. The system, combined with an active monsoon trough, is sustaining widespread rainfall across central and eastern regions. Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal face intense rainfall, with isolated areas possibly receiving exceptionally heavy showers exceeding 204.5 millimetres. Authorities have issued orange to red-level warnings in vulnerable zones, raising concerns about waterlogging, swollen rivers, and localized flooding. The depression, located around 40 kilometres northwest of Jamshedpur on Friday morning, is moving west-northwestward and is projected to weaken into a low-pressure area within 24 hours. This movement, along with the monsoon trough extending from Amritsar to Digha, is maintaining strong monsoon activity. The trough also stretches southeastward toward the northwestern Bay of Bengal, contributing to the persistent rainfall. Delhi-NCR is under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall, with thunderstorms, rain, and gusty winds expected. The national capital may see temperatures hovering near 36 degrees Celsius during the day and 29 degrees Celsius at night. Farmers are advised to prevent waterlogging by ensuring proper drainage, relocate harvested crops and agricultural equipment to secure locations, and avoid outdoor work during thunderstorms or strong winds. Vulnerable crops like bananas, maize, and vegetables require additional protection.
