Mumbai Slum Dwellers Seek Nightly Respite on Versova Beach Amid Sweltering Heat As temperatures in Mumbai continue to rise under a relentless heatwave, a growing number of slum residents are turning to Versova beach for relief from the unbearable conditions of their poorly ventilated homes. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of fluctuating temperatures and a below-normal monsoon season, prompting many to seek refuge on the shoreline during the night. Residents living in densely packed settlements near the Versova coastline have begun spending their nights on the beach, where the sea breeze offers a temporary escape from the oppressive heat. The practice, which has become a nightly routine for many families, involves gathering on the sand after sunset and returning to their homes by dawn. "Every day, we sleep on the beach to escape the intense heat," said a slum dweller speaking to ANI. "It becomes impossible to stay inside our homes because of the heat, so we come here at night." Another resident, Rahul, added that the majority of those sleeping outdoors are from local slum areas, with a smaller number of visitors who end up staying overnight. A resident from Uttar Pradesh noted that people typically return to their homes once the rainy season begins. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for isolated rainfall and thunderstorms in parts of Maharashtra, offering some relief to residents struggling with the heat. The agency forecasts a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 1-2 degrees Celsius over the interior regions of Maharashtra over the next three days, followed by a decline.
