Surprise Fire Audits, E-Bus Feeder Service for Ganeshotsav Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced surprise fire safety inspections at all Ganesh mandals across the city during the 10-day Ganeshotsav festival. NMC commissioner Vipin Itankar revealed that civic teams will conduct unannounced audits at the mandals, even after they receive mandatory clearances. He emphasized that the use of plastic props, which are highly flammable, remains a significant fire hazard. Itankar also highlighted the administration’s efforts to reduce traffic congestion and parking issues by exploring an e-bus feeder service connecting Metro stations to major Ganesh mandals. Commissioner of police Vishwas Nangre-Patil warned against the use of excessively loud audio-visual systems at the festival, citing potential risks to public safety. He cautioned that high-decibel music, particularly with repetitive beats and laser effects, could exacerbate the effects of drug use and lead to violent behavior. Nangre-Patil referenced his experience in Mumbai and Pune, where he had raided rave parties and observed the adverse impact of such music on individuals under the influence of drugs. He also reiterated concerns about the prevalence of MD drug use in Nagpur, noting that it could lower inhibitions and increase the likelihood of violent incidents. To manage waste, the civic body plans to deploy garbage collection vehicles twice daily near mandals and use 15-20 special vehicles to collect ‘nirmalya’ (waste from idol immersion). The collected material will be processed into manure and incense sticks.
