Operation No Wrong Side: Nagpur Traffic Police Register 79 FIRs in Crackdown Against Wrong-Side Driving Nagpur traffic police launched a high-profile operation called “Operation No Wrong Side” to address the growing issue of wrong-side driving, registering 79 FIRs over two days as part of a citywide crackdown. The initiative, which saw 48 cases reported on Saturday and 31 on Sunday, marked a shift from routine traffic fines to criminal prosecution and vehicle seizures. The operation targeted 12 key traffic zones across the city, including Sonegaon, MIDC, Sitabuldi, Sadar, Cotton Market, Lakadganj, Ajni, Sakkardara, Indora, Kalamna, Kamptee, and Pardi, reflecting a coordinated effort to tackle the violation comprehensively. Sonegaon recorded the highest number of cases at 17, followed by Pardi and Lakadganj with 11 each, while Sitabuldi and Sakkardara accounted for 8 cases each. The widespread distribution of incidents highlights the severity of the problem across Nagpur’s traffic network. DCP (Traffic) Aditya Mirkhelkar, who spearheaded the operation, emphasized that the move was necessary to curb the city’s rising trend of wrong-side driving. “We are registering FIRs and seizing vehicles of those caught driving on the wrong side,” he stated, adding that strict enforcement would continue to deter offenders. The crackdown is among the most significant criminal actions taken by traffic police against a single violation. Offenders face charges under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Data from 2025 showed 10,217 cases of wrong-side driving, but the first seven months of 2026 already saw 8,389 incidents—82% of the previous year’s total.
