Chennai Second Airport Project: Central Government Clarifies No Request to Relocate Parandur Site The central government has clarified that Tamil Nadu has not formally requested to relocate the proposed second airport in Chennai from the Parandur site. Union Minister Muraleedhar Mohol stated during a state assembly session that the state government has not submitted any formal request to shift the project to an alternative location. This response came in response to a query raised by Tamil Nadu Congress Party MLA P. Wilson. The proposed airport, part of a larger infrastructure initiative, is planned to be constructed in Parandur, a town located approximately 70 kilometers from Chennai. The project involves developing 5,746 acres of land, with around 2,500 acres allocated to private owners, including local farmers, and the remaining land owned by the government. The central government approved the project in April 2025, with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) submitting a detailed plan in September 2024. The estimated cost for the first phase of the project is approximately ₹10,500 crore. Despite the government's approval, the project has faced significant opposition from local farmers and residents of nearby villages. Concerns over land displacement and the impact on agricultural land have led to prolonged protests. The farmers argue that the project would disrupt their livelihoods and cause irreversible damage to the region’s agricultural economy.
