Tamil Nadu Announces Free LPG Cylinders and Transgender-Friendly Bus Travel Scheme Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced on Monday the implementation of the "Annapurna Super Six" scheme, providing three free LPG cylinders annually to families earning less than ₹2.5 lakh per year. The initiative, set to begin from Pongal 2027, will benefit approximately 1.3 crore households. Under the scheme, eligible families will receive direct bank transfers for the cost of three LPG cylinders, with an estimated annual financial burden of ₹4,000 crore on the state exchequer. Vijay highlighted the economic challenges faced by families due to rising LPG prices, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region. He emphasized the scheme's aim to alleviate financial strain on economically vulnerable households, stating that the government seeks to ensure equitable access to essential resources. The announcement was framed as a commitment to fulfilling promises made during the previous election campaign, which had pledged six free LPG cylinders annually. In addition to the LPG scheme, Vijay unveiled a new initiative for transgender individuals, offering free bus travel. The move also expanded the existing "Vetri Payanam" (Victory Journey) scheme for women, extending free bus travel to all bus types, including express, LSS, and deluxe services. The expanded scheme will be operational from October 2, 2025, allowing women to travel up to 40 kilometers for free on regular and hill routes. Vijay underscored the importance of women's mobility, linking it to economic empowerment and family progress.
