NU Faces Faculty Crisis As 172 Posts Lie Vacant Nagpur University (NU) is grappling with a severe faculty shortage, as 172 out of 255 sanctioned full-time teaching posts remain unfilled, according to a representation submitted by senate member Manmonhan Bajpai to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Bajpai warned that the persistent vacancies are undermining the quality of higher education and violating students’ right to access quality learning. The letter, submitted on Tuesday, criticized the state government for failing to address the crisis despite a significant number of retirements over the past several years. The university’s 31 teaching departments, along with the School of Law, PG Law Department, and B.Ed College, collectively have 255 sanctioned full-time teaching positions. However, only 83 of these are currently occupied, leaving 172 vacancies. The shortage is most acute at the senior level, with 40 sanctioned professor posts, only two of which are filled. This leaves 38 professor positions vacant. Similarly, 13 associate professors are in service against 71 sanctioned posts, resulting in 58 vacancies. At the assistant professor level, 68 teachers are employed against 144 sanctioned posts, leaving 76 vacancies. The representation also highlighted shortages in constituent institutions. The School of Law has one vacant professor post and two assistant professor vacancies. The PG Law Department faces vacancies for one professor, four associate professors, and two assistant professors. The B.Ed College is operating without any associate professors and has only four assistant professors against 20 sanctioned posts, leaving 16 vacancies.
