PGA TOUR Unveils 2028 Season-Ending Structure for Championship Series The PGA TOUR has finalized its new competitive model for the 2028 season, introducing a reimagined structure for the PGA TOUR Championship Series that will culminate in a two-week match-play format. The changes, first announced in June, aim to create a more engaging and consequential conclusion to the season, with the TOUR Championship serving as the centerpiece of the new system. The updated framework includes the PGA TOUR Championship Series, the PGA TOUR Challenger Series, and a season-ending finale that will determine the year’s top performer. The PGA TOUR Championship Series will feature the top players competing in 72-hole stroke-play tournaments with a cut, using a season-long points system to track performance. The top 90 players on the points list will retain their PGA TOUR cards and gain entry into the Championship Series Finale, a standalone event where they can vie for the season-long title, bonus money, and qualification for the TOUR Championship. The Finale will crown both a tournament champion and the No. 1 finisher on the points list, with purse distributions based on the leaderboard. The final standings from this event will also determine the 32-player field for the subsequent match-play phase. The TOUR Championship itself will span two weeks, with the first week featuring a 32-player match-play format across multiple prestigious venues. This marks the first time match play will be used at the TOUR Championship, as well as the first time since the 2023 WGC-Match Play event. The 32 players will be divided into eight groups of four, competing in three days of group matches.
