Jammu and Kashmir Suspends Doctor Over Alleged Misrepresentation Under PMJAY-SEHAT Scheme The Jammu and Kashmir government suspended Dr. Syed Maqbool Ahmad Shah, an associate professor of cardiology at Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, on June 20, 2026, following allegations of misrepresenting 103 cardiac procedures under the PMJAY-SEHAT scheme. The suspension was ordered after an inquiry was initiated following a complaint about the doctor’s alleged misconduct. Health Minister Sakina Itoo emphasized that the investigation revealed serious discrepancies, and the doctor would be given an opportunity to present his case before a final determination was made. Dr. Maqbool, who was affiliated with GMC Anantnag in south Kashmir, faced accusations of falsifying medical records. According to the preliminary investigation report, he allegedly performed Left Bundle Branch Area Pacing (LBBAP) procedures but claimed reimbursement for Dual Chamber Pacemaker packages. The State Health Agency (SHA) flagged the discrepancy after noticing an unusual spike in LBBAP cases, prompting an expert review by the Head of Department (HoD) of Cardiology at SKIMS, Soura. The expert panel concluded that LBBAP is a highly specialized procedure with strict clinical guidelines. They found that 27 out of 55 patients (49%) had normal left ventricular (LV) function and wide QRS morphology, which made the LBBAP procedure medically unnecessary for those individuals.
