Nagpur Ranks Fifth Among Metro Cities in Rape Cases in 2024: NCRB Data Highlights Persistent Challenges Nagpur has been identified as the fifth worst metropolitan city in India for rape cases in 2024, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report. Despite a marginal decline in overall crimes against women compared to 2023, the city continues to face significant challenges in addressing sexual violence. The NCRB data reveals that Nagpur recorded 1,513 crimes against women in 2024, a slight decrease from 1,556 cases in 2023. However, this figure remains higher than the 1,259 cases reported in 2022. The city’s crime rate against women stood at 123.8, placing it seventh among 19 major metropolitan cities. Rape cases in Nagpur totaled 136 in 2024, with a crime rate of 11.1, ranking the city fifth among metropolitan cities. This statistic underscores the persistent prevalence of sexual violence despite ongoing awareness campaigns and policing efforts. The NCRB report also highlights that Nagpur ranked third in sexual harassment cases, with 96 reported incidents and a crime rate of 37.9. These incidents are frequently reported in workplaces, educational institutions, public transport, and on streets, contributing to daily stress and insecurity for women. Nagpur Police have contested the interpretation of the data, emphasizing that a large proportion of reported rape cases involve complaints filed against estranged partners or acquaintances. Senior officials noted that nearly 90% of rape cases are registered by women or girls against known persons, including former boyfriends. This, they argue, may inflate the statistics.#nagpur #domestic_violence #sexual_harassment #national_crime_records_bureau #national_crime_records_bureau #rape_cases
