Apple to Use Four-Sided Curved OLED Display in 2028 iPhones; LG, Samsung Start Preparations Apple is reportedly working on one of the most ambitious iPhone display upgrades ever, with the company collaborating with Samsung Display and LG Display to develop an advanced four-sided curved OLED panel for iPhones expected to launch in 2028. The technology could enable the creation of a nearly bezel-free smartphone, where the screen flows seamlessly across all edges of the device. This design represents a significant leap beyond current smartphone displays, which still feature visible bezels or flat borders. A four-sided curved OLED display is a screen that bends on all four edges—top, bottom, left, and right—allowing the visible screen area to extend toward every edge of the phone. This creates an immersive “all-screen” appearance, making the device look like a single continuous piece of glass. Unlike existing curved displays that only wrap around the sides, this innovation aims to eliminate bezels almost entirely. Industry reports suggest the technology may debut in a future anniversary iPhone lineup around 2027–2028. One of the key advancements in this project is Apple’s shift to transparent cathode technology using Indium Zinc Oxide (IZO). Current OLED panels rely on magnesium-silver alloy cathodes, which can reduce light transmission and cause image distortion near curved edges. The transparent IZO layer is expected to improve light efficiency, ensuring consistent brightness across all four bends while potentially reducing power consumption and enabling thinner display structures. Samsung Display and LG Display are reportedly investing heavily in specialized OLED production infrastructure to meet Apple’s demands.#apple #samsung_display #lg_display #four_sided_curved_oled_display #2028_iphone
