One person dead and two missing after boat sinks near San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island A pontoon pleasure boat capsized and sank near San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island on Tuesday, resulting in one fatality, two missing individuals, and the rescue of 16 others, according to authorities. The incident occurred approximately 600 yards from the iconic tourist attraction, which is home to the former Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. The vessel, which was carrying 19 people at the time of the accident, was believed to have departed from the St Francis Yacht Club in the city’s Marina district. Initial reports suggested a fire had broken out on board, but San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen clarified during a press conference that no blaze was detected. The exact cause of the capsizing remains under investigation. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found a “severely injured” individual on the vessel and initiated CPR before transporting the person to shore, where they were pronounced dead. Of the 16 people rescued, 13 were safely brought to land, while three others were taken to a San Francisco hospital for medical treatment. Some of the passengers sustained impact injuries from falling into the water, and a dog aboard the boat was also declared dead. All passengers are believed to be adults. Search-and-rescue operations continued throughout Tuesday afternoon as the U.S. Coast Guard deployed 11 boats, helicopters, and divers to locate the two missing individuals.
