Two individuals, Afroz Begum, a 60-year-old woman, and Sandeep Maravi, were killed in an electrocution accident on Wednesday, prompting authorities to issue safety advisories. However, residents and local officials argue that these measures lack enforcement, as open electrical panels, exposed wiring, and sagging cables continue to pose risks in areas like Hansapuri. The TOI investigation revealed that distribution panels (DPs) in several neighborhoods remain unsecured, with broken or missing doors, hanging cables, and signs of neglect. These conditions, combined with the ongoing monsoon season, have created dangerous scenarios. Waterlogging around exposed electrical equipment has exacerbated risks, as residents report that the recent fatalities were preceded by similar conditions. Residents have expressed frustration with MSEDCL’s response, noting that complaints about hazardous installations have gone unaddressed for months. Prabhag 8 corporator Wasim Khan highlighted this issue, stating that he had submitted multiple complaints regarding damaged DPs in his ward without any repairs. “After the recent electrocution death, one would have expected immediate action, but these dangerous installations continue to remain unattended,” Khan said.
