Jothimani raised concerns about the lack of support for legislators, particularly first-time representatives from modest backgrounds. The move includes a range of car models, including Mahindra SUVs, Scorpio variants, and XUV 3XO models, with some marked for test drives, which were displayed at the Secretariat the day after the announcement. Each MLA will also receive a monthly allowance of Rs 1 lakh, which includes Rs 75,000 for the driver’s salary, fuel, and maintenance, as well as an additional Rs 25,000 for hiring an office assistant or secretary. Vijay emphasized that the provision of vehicles is essential for MLAs to travel regularly in their constituencies, address public grievances, and monitor development projects without relying on private transportation. The government stated that necessary amendments and official orders will be issued to implement the scheme for all MLAs, regardless of political affiliation. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the primary opposition party.
